Roman Temple / Piedras Labradas Plateau (Jarilla)

Ancestral traces of man’s presence

Awaken your curiosity, just like the historians who discovered it, and explore the traces of our past in a magical setting.

Discover the remains of what was once a Roman sanctuary on Collado de Piedras Labradas in Jarilla at an altitude of approximately 1,050 metres. It is believed that this Roman temple was built on the site of an ancient Vettone sanctuary (inhabitants of the territory before the Romans).

In the centre of the plateau are the remains of what was a Roman temple: blocks, pieces of a pediment or cornice mouldings. This is the highest Roman temple on the Iberian Peninsula and the farthest one from an urban centre. It still preserves remnants of the original layout.

To get to know this landscape in more depth and learn about its history, we recommend taking the Piedras Labradas Trail. It is accessed via a mountain road suitable for all-terrain vehicles, although walking is recommended.
