Autumn is the season when the cranes migrate from northern Europe to Extremadura. The Gabriel y Galán Reservoir is the northernmost stopover in the region, where over 2,000 cranes choose to spend the winter, attracted by the verdant dehesas in Trasierra-Tierras de Granadilla. Cranes can be seen heading to their roosts on the banks of the reservoir, along with geese, ducks, great cormorants, ospreys, and black vultures, among others.
