Reservoirs

Gabriel y Galán Reservoir

The Gabriel y Galán reservoir is an important hydraulic infrastructure located on the Alagón River, a tributary of the Tagus, in the municipality of Guijo de Granadilla. It is one of the largest reservoirs in Extremadura. It takes its name from the poet José María Gabriel y Galán, a Salamanca-born writer who embraced the local Spanish dialect, Castúo, and promoted it in his poetry.

The scenic beauty of this reservoir and the natural surroundings make it ideal for recreational activities such as fishing, hiking and all kinds of water sports: canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, paddle surfing, kitesurfing, and even boating. There are picnic areas and rest areas for visitors and tourists.

The reservoir is located in the SPA of the same name, so there are many birds that can be seen in and around the reservoir. In winter, it’s a popular roosting area for cranes on their migration to northern Europe, roosting on the reservoir’s islands and in the northern part of the reservoir. The Gabriel y Galán Reservoir also has a captive breeding centre for the Iberian lynx in the vicinity.

Ahigal Reservoir or Las Cumbres Reservoir

Located between Ahigal, Guijo de Granadilla and Cerezo, the Ahigal Reservoir is an ideal destination for nature and adventure lovers. This reservoir collects the waters of the Palomero stream, creating a perfect environment to enjoy outdoor activities.

It’s the perfect place to cast your rod and enjoy the stillness of the water. If it’s action you prefer, water sports await you. And when the sun shines, there’s nothing better than a refreshing swim.

Nearby you’ll find a shaded picnic area where you can enjoy a relaxing meal with family and friends.

The reservoir is also a nature lovers’ paradise. Visit the ornithological observatory and marvel at the diversity of birds that inhabit the area.

If you like to explore, there’s a hiking trail that runs parallel to the reservoir which is inhabited by all manner of flora and fauna.

Embalse de Guijo de Granadilla

Although this reservoir was created in 1982 to generate hydroelectric power on the Alagón River, it is also a paradise for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts.

Fishing enthusiasts, for example, can look forward to a truly relaxing experience fishing in spots like Salto del Guijo.

If you like a little more action, canoeing and kayaking on the reservoir are also great options.

One of the most characteristic features of the reservoir is the Pontón, a spectacular Roman bridge which became submerged and as a result had to be move, stone by stone, to the site where it stands today. This bridge towers over the water’s surface, creating a spectacular contrast between history and nature.
