A stroll through the Sunday market stalls in Ambroz-Cáparra, followed by a refreshing dip in one of the nearby swimming holes.

Start the day with a hearty breakfast in Palomero. There’s nothing like a piece of toast made from freshly baked bread sprinkled with olive oil produced from the best Manzanilla Cacereña olives. Take a moment to observe the valley filled with olive trees, stretching as far as the eye can see.

Next stop, Ahigal, which holds a traditional street market every Sunday: almost a hundred stalls full of fashion, food and everything else you can imagine. Contemplate the legends of Ahigal as you walk towards the Pozo del Cinojal. They will surprise you. Enjoy the tapas and beers provided by the town to visitors every Sunday after the market.

Try one of the local culinary specialities in Santibáñez el Bajo : “migas santibañejas” (fried breadcrumbs with garlic and olive oil) and “ajo de patatas” (garlic smashed potatoes). For dessert, try one of the traditional local confections, accompanied by a good cup of “puchero” coffee.

Finally, take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water of the natural swimming hole in Santa Cruz de Paniagua. You won’t regret it. The perfect end to your day in western Ambroz-Cáparra.

If you visit in August, we suggest you swapping the traditional Sunday market in Ahigal for the two-day medieval market that takes place in the month of August.

Comerte a bocados Ambroz-Cáparra para divertirte en un mercado dominical y terminar el día refrescándote en una de sus zonas de baño.

Comienza la jornada con un desayuno contundente en Palomero, te sorprenderá la calidad de la tostada con pan de pueblo y aceite obtenido de la mejor Manzanilla Cacereña. Aprovecha para divisar el valle cuajado de olivos, se te perderá la vista entre ellos.

Continuamos el viaje hacia Ahigal, donde tenemos la suerte de disfrutar cada domingo de su mercadillo tradicional: casi un centenar de puestos plenos de moda, alimentación y todo lo que puedas imaginar. Envuélvete en las leyendas ahigaleñas mientras caminas hacia el Pozo del Cinojal, te sorprenderá. Recomendamos finalizar en el mercadillo disfrutando de las tapas y cañas que ofrece todos los domingos la localidad a los visitantes tras este mercadillo.

Recomendamos conocer la gastronomía de Santibáñez el Bajo con sus platos singulares: migas santibañejas y ajo de patatas. Pon la guinda al pastel de este menú con sus dulces tradicionales y un buen café de puchero.

Finaliza tu jornada en la piscina natural de Santa Cruz de Paniagua dándote un baño refrescante en sus aguas cristalinas, ¡no te arrepentirás! El broche de oro a tu jornada por el oeste de Ambroz-Cáparra.

Si tu visita coincide con el mes de agosto, te proponemos cambiar la visita al mercadillo tradicional dominical de Ahigal por el mercado medieval que tiene lugar durante dos días de este mes de verano.

Any season is perfect for enjoying birdwatching in its purest form in Trasierra-Tierras de Granadilla, an ideal destination for observing a wide variety of bird species. In the olive groves, you might spot a rufous-tailed scrub robin whilst the dehesa is home to the Eurasian eagle-owl and the black stork. In the pine forests, look for the red-necked nightjar and the goldcrest. The rocky cliffs are inhabited by the griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture, peregrine falcon, blue rock thrush and the black stork. In deciduous forests, you may find the northern goshawk and the European honey buzzard, whilst the mountainous areas are frequented by various warblers, the Northern wheatear and the majestic golden eagle, the largest of our raptors.

Your day begins with a scenic hike and birdwatching adventure through the picturesque dehesa landscape surrounding Santibáñez el Bajo. After stopping for lunch in Zarza de Granadilla, you’ll take a boat tour of the Gabriel y Galán Reservoir, accompanied by the graceful common cranes that migrate here each winter seeking refuge from the harsh northern cold and roost in the reservoir’s surroundings. Watching them fly at sunset and hearing their distinctive trumpeting calls is an unforgettable spectacle you won’t want to miss!

As you sail along, be on the lookout for the birdlife like osprey, pintail ducks, shovelers, wigeons, gadwalls, and mallards and learn all about these species, their habits and behaviours.

Let your senses take flight under the skies of a region bursting with biodiversity!

Cada época del año es un buen momento para disfrutar de la ornitología en estado puro, en Trasierra-Tierras de Granadilla, un destino ideal para la observación de aves. En los olivares podremos ver al alzacola rojizo; en la dehesa búhos reales y cigüeña negra; en los pinares el chotacabras  pardo y el reyezuelo sencillo; en los roquedos el buitre leonado, alimoche, halcón peregrino, roquero solitario o cigüeña negra; en los bosques caducifolios azores o abejeros europeos; y en las sierras y zonas altas las currucas, collalba gris y la mayor de  nuestras rapaces, el águila real.

Tu visita comenzará con una ruta senderista acompañada de una observación de aves por el entorno de dehesa de Santibáñez El Bajo. Y después de hacer una parada en Zarza de Granadilla para una buena comida, daremos un agradable paseo en barco por el embalse de Gabriel y Galán en compañía de las queridas visitantes de invierno, las grullas que llegan a estas tierras huyendo de los rigurosos fríos del norte y que tienen en el entorno del embalse su dormidero. Verlas volar al atardecer escuchando su característico trompeteo, es un espectáculo natural único ¡que no debes  perderte!

Navegarás al mismo tiempo que contemplas la avifauna acuática como el águila pescadora, ánade rabudo, pato cuchara, silbón europeo, ánade friso y azulón y aprendes sobre estas especies, sus costumbres y comportamientos.

¡Vuela con tus sentidos bajo los cielos de una comarca de gran biodiversidad!

Start your morning early in Segura de Toro with a visit to Castaños del Temblar, taking a short but stunning hiking trail, the Castaños del Temblar Trail. Each one of the five chestnut trees has its own name: Hondonero, Retorcío, Bronco, del Arroyo and Menuero. There are thousands of stories hidden among the branches and leaves of these “Noble Trees of Extremadura” Discover the region’s rich artisanal traditions as you wander among them.

Feel the gentle breeze on your face as you marvel at the breathtaking views of the Ambroz Valley.

Next, your journey will take you to Hervás, where you can visit one of the few remaining artisans who still work with chestnut wood, crafting beautiful baskets in the heart of the Hervás Jewish quarter. Stop for lunch in Baños de Montemayor to recharge your batteries and plan a visit to Barrio del Castañar in the village of Baños de Montemayor, where all the buildings were made from chestnut wood. If you come in the month of November to do the Basketmakers’ Route, you’ll learn all about the culture and tradition of the chestnut tree. You’ll learn about how basketmakers used to make their baskets from the wood of this tree.

Don’t miss this journey through the traditional crafts of these villages, from their origins up to the present day. Make sure to sample the local food, from chestnuts and wild mushrooms to hearty traditional dishes served in the charming local taverns and restaurants. Indulge in tender kid goat, succulent lamb, cured meats, or special comfort foods like “patatas revolconas” and “zorongollo” – Yum!

Un paseo por las raíces de la artesanía y las tradiciones de nuestra comarca, un viaje a otros tiempos que fomentarán tu espíritu creativo y artístico.

Comenzarás tu mañana temprano en Segura de Toro visitando los Castaños de Temblar, a través de una corta y fantástica ruta senderista, Ruta castaños del Temblar. Quedarás hechizado con los cinco castaños estrella, cada uno con su propio nombre: Hondonero, Retorcío, Bronco, del Arroyo y Menuero. Estos árboles declarados “Árboles Singulares de Extremadura” te contarán miles de historias que esconden entre sus ramas y hojas, cada uno con sus peculiaridades y descubrirás el origen de la tradición artesana de la zona.

Disfrutarás de la brisa de este maravilloso entorno y te sorprenderás con las espectaculares vistas del Valle del Ambroz.

Tras haber empezado el día con fuerza, tu recorrido te llevará hacia Hervás, aquí podrás visitar una de las pocas artesanas que todavía trabajan la madera de castaño, haciendo cestas de castaño en plena judería de Hervás.  Finaliza tu jornada en Baños de Montemayor para hacer una parada a comer, reponer fuerzas y concertar una visita para conocer el Barrio del Castañar de la villa de Baños de Montemayor, donde todas las construcciones fueron hechas a base de madera de castaño. Además, si vienes a hacer la Ruta de los cesteros, en el mes de noviembre, te sumergirás en la cultura del castaño y su tradición. Aprenderás sobre el oficio de los cesteros, quienes elaboraban cestas con la madera de este árbol.

No te pierdas este recorrido por la tradición artesana de los pueblos desde sus raíces hasta nuestros días. Y por supuesto, no te vayas sin probar algunos de los productos gastronómicos locales como castañas o setas y degustar en los restaurantes, mesones o asadores de la zona, platos tradicionales de carne de cabrito o cordero, embutidos, patatas revolconas o zorongollo, base de una cocina sencilla, ¡para chuparte los dedos!

Visit one of the most emblematic spots in the municipality of Gargantilla. Discover the story of Francisca Pérez Martín, affectionately known as “Tía Kika”, behind the doors of a restored mansion. It is the story of a woman ahead of her time who lived a melancholic and solitary existence. She studied to be a teacher, although she never practiced as one. Take a tour of her home, whose tools and utensils reveal what a traditional home of the time was like, the way of life, and the customs. Take some time to stroll around and observe the architecture of the Perché quarter, considered to be the origin of the village.

Adéntrate en la casa y deja que Tía Kika te lleve en un viaje inolvidable a través del tiempo conociendo su legado.

Visita uno de los rincones más emblemáticos del municipio de Gargantilla. Tras las puertas de una casona rehabilitada se esconde la historia de doña Francisca Pérez Martín, alias “Tía Kika”, mujer adelantada a su tiempo con una melancólica y solitaria existencia. Estudió Magisterio aunque nunca pudo ejercer de maestra. Revive en un recorrido la que fue su casa y que hoy nos muestra cómo era una vivienda tradicional, el modo de vida y las costumbres, a través de las herramientas y utensilios que alberga la casa. Aprovecha para callejear y disfrutar de la arquitectura del barrio Perché, considerado el origen del pueblo.
