Nestled in the Tras la Sierra mountains, between the Jerte and Ambroz valleys, Cabezabellosa is the highest municipality in the Trasierra-Tierras de Granadilla region (836 m).

The town’s identity is intricately linked to the goatherds and transhumants who were the drivers of economic and social development. Every December, the Jornada del Cabrero festival invites visitors to experience the rich culture, timeless traditions, and enduring charm of the goatherd’s way of life.

The 17th-century Church of San Lorenzo and the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo are the most notable religious buildings. For popular architecture, it’s worth visiting the traditional washing places.

For the best sunsets in the area, don’t miss the Ermita del Castillo Overlook, an impressive steel structure with two walkways offering breathtaking panoramic views. From this vantage point, you can take in the sweeping landscapes of Las Hurdes, Gata, Granadilla, and the Sierra de Francia. Another must-see is Pico Pitolero (1,352 meters), where you’ll be treated to stunning vistas overlooking the town. This neighbourhood is also the heart of one of the most beloved traditions in Baños de Montemayor’: chestnut basket-making.

On Palm Sunday, Baños de Montemayor is decked out like an authentic Roman villa for the celebration of “Termarium: History comes to life”. This event marks the start of the thermal spa season by reviving its Roman origins.
