Jewish Quarter of Hervás

Peaceful coexistence between Jews and Christians

Relive the Sephardic past of Hervás at the celebration of the annual Converts festival in early July.

Declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble in 1969, this neighbourhood is a living testimony to the Jewish heritage in the region. It is known for its unique architecture, cobbled streets and atmosphere evoking the past.

The ensemble is a reflection of the Jewish presence in Hervás for centuries. The stone houses and narrow streets are characteristic of this neighbourhood. Although no traces of the original buildings remain, it is believes that the old synagogue was located at Calle Rabilero 19.

Strolling along the cobbled streets, exploring the buildings steeped in centuries of history, and visiting sites like the narrowest street in Spain offer a deep insight into the life and traditions of the Jewish community in Hervás.

Interestingly, the old Casa de la Cofradía served as a meeting hall for the Jewish community and a winepress for producing Kosher wine.

The Jewish Quarter of Hervás is a symbol of how to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of a community that enriched the region’s history and diversity.
