Trails
Discover the trails of the Ambroz Valley:
A multitude of hiking and cycling trails await you in the Ambroz Valley. Although autumn is generally the most popular season, any time of year is a good time to explore the region’s different ecosystems, from alpine forests to dehesas and olive groves, grassy fields and glistening bodies of water.
Any season of the year is ideal for an impromptu getaway or planned holiday.
Trails that seem to organically stretch out to embrace the people who once inhabited these lands. Horse and mule trails, transhumant livestock trails, wagon and carriage trails, iron roads, old railways that now offer a variety of options for runners, walkers and cyclists.
Remember to always wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and be sure to bring water, food and sunscreen.
Did you know?
Vía de la Plata was the most critical road in Roman Hispania, linking Emérita Augusta and Astúrica Augusta. Its purpose was to establish military control and promote the Romanization of the entire western region of the Iberian Peninsula.
The Roman route, known as “Iter ab Emeritam Asturicam”, crossed through Ambroz-Cáparra from south to north, taking advantage of the same path already used by humans and livestock to reach the central plateau. Along the way it left various landmarks such as milestones, Roman mansions, baths, villas, and bridges.
Over the centuries, the ancient Roman road evolved into a military road, a livestock grazing route and a bridle path. These changes facilitated exchanges and connections in our region. Ultimately, thanks to extensive restoration and preservation efforts, the Vía de la Plata has become a highly valued tourist route which is now recognised as part of the Way of St. James.
It is a declared historical site, undoubtedly due to its archaeological significance as an ancient Roman road.
