Pozo de la Nieve and Corral de los Lobos (La Garganta)

Human ingenuity on display

Discover the ingenuity and skill of humans to protect themselves from the elements or defend themselves from animals.

Human ingenuity has been the key to dealing with setbacks as they have arisen throughout history, ranging from how to keep ice from melting in summer to how to deal with livestock’s mortal enemy.

The Pozo de la Nieve is a cylinder-shaped structure whose function was to supply ice and keep it frozen throughout the year, especially in the summer months when the heat made it difficult to keep it from melting.

At the end of the 19th century, the ice was extracted from four wells in La Garganta and transported by train to the cities. One of them is still preserved today.

About 300 metres away on foot is the Corral de los Lobos, originally a thousand-year-old trap used by shepherds to protect their livestock and the rest of the population from the threat of the wolves that stalked the territory.

You can walk through these places along the route of the Pozo de la Nieve and the Corral de los Lobos. If you want to know more about the culture of wolves, visit the El Lobo Visitor Centre in La Garganta.
