Since Roman times, Baños de Montemayor has been home to a nationally renowned thermal spa. Its waters are perfect for all kinds of wellness, beauty and stress relief treatments.
In Roman times, these thermal baths were used by the Roman military and civil servants, who saw the waters as a way of alleviating their ailments. Although they peaked in popularity between the first and fourth centuries, they would continue to be used thanks to their strategic location on the Vía de la Plata.
The complex is made up of two buildings. The main building is the most modern one. The structure resembles that of a ship and it is here that most of the wellness treatments take place.
The older building houses the Roman baths, a circular space in which the overhead lighting and beautiful carved decoration have been preserved. This building houses the natural spring from which the thermal waters flow from the “Columna” and “Arqueta” springs. At a temperature of 43ºC, the thermal water is beneficial for rheumatological conditions, arthrosis and respiratory illnesses. There is a museum in the vaults of the old building which explains to visitors the history of the spa and, by extension, the town.
Since its construction more than two thousand years ago, millions of people have benefitted from its waters. These waters were awarded silver and bronze medals at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 for their excellent qualities.
