Discover the original bell tower, one-of-a-kind in Extremadura.
Some sources suggest that the building may have been erected on the foundation of a previous fortress where there was a well or cistern. Numerous renovations were carried out in the 20th century, especially on the roof, and an annexe was added to the building. Since then, this church has been the only parish church in Baños de Montemayor.
The history of Baños de Montemayor is unique due to the merger of two towns in 1644: Baños de Montemayor and Baños de Béjar. Until 1959, the town had two different parishes, each one belonging to a different diocese. The Church of St. Mary belonged to the Coria diocese (today Coria-Cáceres), whereas the Church of St. Catherine was part of the Plasencia diocese. Both churches subsequently came under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Plasencia. The Church of St. Catherine ceased to operate as a church and was used for cultural purposes.
